Convert altitude to pressure for ICAO standard atmosphere [NACA3182]

This is the inverse of pressure_to_altitude_icao(). Altitudes below the tropopause height, \(H^*\), are converted using altitude_to_pressure_troposphere() and the remaining altitudes are converted using altitude_to_pressure_stratosphere().

Unlike pressure_to_altitude_icao(), the conversion is never in-place as the altitude is often an integer array which cannot store the pressure. It also supports multidimensional and dask-backed arrays, with the latter remaining lazy.

Parameters:

altitude (NumpyOrDataArray) – Altitude in m. Any NaN values remain NaN.

Returns:

Pressure in hPa, of the same shape as altitude. If altitude is a xarray.DataArray, its coordinates, attributes and name are retained.

Return type:

NumpyOrDataArray

Examples

>>> altitude_to_pressure_icao(np.array([0, 5000, 11000, 15000]))
array([1013.25      ,  540.19717375,  226.31981252,  120.43472736])
