Imperial Academic Writing Sessions

About our sessions

Do you have a paper to work on? A fellowship or other funding proposal to write? Maybe your PhD thesis to finish?!

Do you struggle to focus and get down to the task of writing due to the many other distractions of work and everyday life?

Academic writing is challenging. Even more challenging is focusing on writing with all the other work-related tasks that researchers and academics have to contend with. Frequent emails, meetings, teaching, capturing and analysing data, and of course other distractions such as social media, phone calls, etc. When it comes down to focusing on writing, it’s easy to procrastinate.

The Imperial Academic Writing Sessions team run a series of fortnightly sessions on Thursdays, 09:30-12:00, to give you dedicated time to work on a writing task of your choice, alongside a community of other Imperial researchers.

In addition to providing structured time to help you focus on a personal writing task, the group provides a chance to meet and discuss progress with other members of the Imperial research community. Bring along a piece of your work - perhaps a paper you’ve been trying to finish, a report or a part of your thesis you’re keen to focus on - and take advantage of our community sessions to provide structure and motivation for your writing.

Sessions include four 25-minute blocks of writing time (based on the “Pomodoro Technique”) preceded by a brief introduction and time to share your aims and goals for the session with other attendees.

All sessions start at 09:30 and end by 12:00.
