Where AI meets immersive healthcare

As the healthcare sector continues to evolve rapidly, the integration of cutting-edge technologies is reshaping how care is delivered. Extended Reality (XR) — including Virtual Reality (VR), Mixed Reality (MR) and Augmented Reality (AR) — is becoming increasingly influential in healthcare, offering new opportunities for training, surgical planning and remote collaboration.

At the same time, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionising diagnostics, patient care and data-driven decision-making. The convergence of these two fields is set to usher in a new era of healthcare, marked by unparalleled precision, personalisation and patient engagement.

You are invited to submit papers on applications of AI, XR and machine learning in healthcare. This edition also addresses the clinical translation of closed-loop brain-computer interface (BCI) systems integrated with immersive technologies.

HI-XR is held as part of IEEE AIxVR 2027, the IEEE International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and eXtended and Virtual Reality, which brings together researchers and professionals across AI, AR, MR and VR.

Objectives

What the workshop sets out to do

1

Showcase advances

Facilitate in-depth discussion of the latest advances in healthcare intelligence, including the intersection of XR and AI in healthcare.

2

Chart the future

Identify emerging research areas and collaboratively chart future directions for these interconnected fields.

3

Bridge to the clinic

Combine AI's analytical capabilities with XR's immersive experiences and BCI, and discuss how to translate them from research into clinical practice.

Workshop Program

Talks, papers and discussion

The workshop is expected to feature keynote presentations, peer-reviewed research papers, demonstrations and interactive discussions.

The workshop date and detailed schedule will be announced once the final IEEE AIxVR 2027 conference program has been compiled.

Submission

How to submit

Format & length

Papers may be up to 4 pages, or up to 6 pages for papers with extensive imaging, excluding references. Submit a single PDF, with an optional separate video file.

Format your paper with the IEEE manuscript templates. We recommend the LaTeX template.

Review process

Review is double-blind, so submissions must be anonymised. Each paper receives at least two expert reviews, and invited papers are held to the same standard.

Papers by the organisers are reviewed independently to avoid conflicts of interest.

Proceedings

Accepted papers will be considered for publication in the IEEE AIxVR 2027 workshop proceedings, subject to the conference's publication requirements and IEEE's final approval.

Presentation

Accepted papers are presented in the workshop's paper sessions. Demo tables and poster boards will be available for live XR and BCI demonstrations.

Submit via EasyChair

All papers are submitted online through the HI-XR workshop's EasyChair page. Deadline: 15 December 2026, 23:59 AoE.
